Weekly report · week ending Sep 27, 2026
Barry Diller's group pulled its buyout proposal, MGM's directors reaffirmed a standalone plan, and the town turned toward G2E with Durango's expansion at its halfway point.
Seven days across the Las Vegas business: 171 stories, 831 board posts, 82 promotion signals, 470 open roles.
The week belonged to a deal that did not happen. Barry Diller's People Inc. retracted its proposal to acquire the remaining shares of MGM Resorts International, ending months of discussions over a transaction that would have valued the company at more than $18 billion. MGM's Board of Directors responded by reaffirming its strategy as a standalone company, pointing to its Las Vegas leadership, regional properties, BetMGM and MGM Osaka as the sources of value it intends to prove out on its own. For operators, suppliers and staff, that settles the ownership question at the largest employer on the Strip and puts the burden back on execution.
Elsewhere, capital kept moving. A steel truss weighing about 180,000 pounds was set at Durango Casino, marking the halfway point of a $385 million expansion in southwest Las Vegas. BetMGM opened its first poolside sportsbook at Tailgate Beach Club inside Mandalay Bay. Suppliers spent the week staging for G2E, which opens as the week closes, and the Golden Knights home opener and a new Sphere residency follow.
