Conventions
The badge economy: citywide shows, the venues that hold them, and the monthly attendance line that is carrying Las Vegas demand in 2026.
The desk's read
Group business is holding the year up. Convention attendance ran up double digits through the first half while total visitation stayed flat, and the shape shows show by show: CES 2026 drew 148,392 audited (+4% YoY; 4,100+ exhibitors, 2.6M net sq ft); SHOT Show 2026 drew 53,000+ industry professionals; 2,744 exhibitors, 834,500+ net sq ft; ~$88M local economic impact; World of Concrete 2026 drew 47,400+ registered professionals, 1,300+ exhibitors (down from ~58,000 in 2025). The mechanism is documented: convention visitors spend about $1,600 per trip against roughly $1,200 for leisure (source), and operators are leaning in, with group room-night mix approaching a fifth of the book (source).
What the mix does not explain by itself is the rate slide. Occupancy has slipped too (source), and operators are actively discounting the leisure side: waived resort fees and promotion-heavy summers (source), with executives naming leisure and Canadian softness, not group pricing, as the drag. Group is the strong leg of a soft market: the Economy page carries both lines.
The forward calendar is the trade: MAGIC Las Vegas (Fall) (~25,000 expected), G2E (Global Gaming Expo) 2026 (~29,000 expected), SEMA Show / AAPEX 2026 (~160,000 expected across SEMA + AAPEX (2025 edition drew ~160,000 from 140 countries, 2,300+ brands)), RE+ 2026 (~40,000 expected (LVCC)) still to come. If those land at expectation, flat visitation with soft rate reads as mix shift; if they underdeliver, the same chart starts reading as demand loss.
