About Vegas Signals

A public roll-up of the Las Vegas hospitality, gaming and resort business: the news, the numbers, the boards, the jobs, and the calendar, updated by scheduled collectors.

Where things come from

News is aggregated from local and trade outlets (Vital Vegas, the Review-Journal's casinos desk, Eater Vegas, The Nevada Independent, CDC Gaming, Casino.org, GamblingNews, iGaming Business, Legal Sports Report, Skift, Hotel Technology News). Headlines link to their sources and are never rewritten. General trade feeds are filtered to Las Vegas relevance by keyword.

Board and social posts come from public RSS feeds of r/vegas, r/LasVegas, VegasMessageBoard and Vegas Fanatics, plus per-property Bluesky searches and budget-metered X collection (run manually, never on the daily cycle); the store is backfilled to January 1 via the Arctic Shift reddit archive. Local TV feeds (KTNV, 8 News Now, FOX5, KNPR) join the news desks, filtered to the industry slice. Jobs come from operator career boards with public APIs. Tourism and gaming figures come from LVCVA and Nevada Gaming Control Board releases (and press coverage of them), each linked where shown.

How sentiment works: and its limits

Claude reads each public board post in full, from the full text where the collectors clipped it, and judges each property the post names as positive, negative, mixed or neutral. Tested one post at a time on a hand-labeled set of 220 real posts checked into the repo, it matched the labels on 93 percent. A post Claude has yet to read is labeled by Jev, a decision model, where Jev is at least 80 percent sure: Jev was that sure on 187 of the same 220 posts and matched the labels on 96 percent of those. Any other post is scored by a keyword lexicon over its title and preview: words like "comped", "upgraded", "recommend" score positive; "overpriced", "rundown", "never again" score negative. The lexicon carries some judgment beyond word-matching: negation flips a hit ("not great" reads as a complaint), trip-planning questions and ad copy are held to a higher bar so "which hotel is the best?" scores nothing, gambling wins and losses are treated as luck rather than opinion, and a post comparing several properties credits each only with the sentences about it, including a post Jev labels. A property's score is (positive − negative) / scored posts × 100 over the last 30 days; a mixed verdict counts on neither side. On the same 220 posts the lexicon labels about four in five correctly, and when they call a post positive or negative they are right roughly three times in four. Recent reddit and Bluesky threads are read past the headline: comments are judged by Claude, or by the lexicon where Claude has yet to read them, attributed to the properties they name, and capped per thread so one hot thread cannot swamp a month. It is a barometer of board chatter: sample sizes are small, sarcasm can fool it, and a single viral thread can swing a week. Mention counts are shown next to every score so you can judge the base.

Promotion detection

A board post is flagged when Claude finds an offer in it: free play, resort-fee waivers, promo codes, status matches, mailers. Posts Claude has yet to read and news headlines are flagged when their text matches offer language, and every thread in a forum's deals section counts. A flag marks an offer someone posted; confirm any offer on the property's own site.

Where a model is used

Claude reads board posts and thread comments for sentiment and offers, and reads each news item for its relevance to Las Vegas and its desk. Jev, a decision model, labels the sentiment of board posts Claude has yet to read where it is at least 80 percent sure (pipeline/jev-senti.mjs). Keyword rules in pipeline/analyze.mjs cover the rest. Facts come from the linked sources, and headlines are never rewritten. Claude also writes the weekly report's headline, standfirst, lede and desk paragraphs, the citywide trends on the Promotions page, and the property Intel boxes. An OpenAI model reviews each of these against its sources before it publishes, and a security review reads it for secrets, private data and unsupported allegations. The weekly report and the trends publish when, after up to three rounds in which Claude revises what the reviews found, the review against the sources finds no factual error, material omission, misleading statement or broken link, the security review finds no secret, private data or unsupported allegation, and the two reviews report at most two medium findings, such as an overstatement or a dropped caveat. Findings about wording or house style do not count. Any other weekly report or trends, any drafted before its week ends, and every Intel box wait for the editor's approval. The trends and the Intel boxes say on the page that Claude generated them. The monthly and year-to-date analysis is template text around the datastore's numbers.

Known gaps

MGM and Wynn career boards sit behind bot protection and are not indexed. Monthly LVCVA/NGCB figures update on their release cycle, so the Economy page can trail by several weeks. Sentiment coverage is only as deep as the boards' public feeds.
